Carbon monoxide detectors in student accommodation and lettings
My daughter has just moved into a student flat were we found no carbon monoxide detectors, which I thought would be a legal requirement. But after speaking to the letting company they told me that they there's no legal requirement for them.
We all know the consequences of a carbon monoxide leak...
This is what I received from Save the Student when I put the question to them regarding the law...
They are only legally required for any room containing a solid fuel burning appliance, and not for Gas appliances. However gas boilers can emit carbon monoxide, and the government say "we would expect and encourage reputable landlords to ensure that working carbon monoxide alarms are installed in rooms with gas boilers". So we advise you put strong pressure on the agent to do the right thing.
