The phrase “will of the people” only to be used when at least 75%of people agree
Politicians use the phrase “will of the people” to justify their decision to proceed with Brexit. The Brexit referendum result demonstrated that the country is divided and not united as the phrase implies. Use of this phrase should only be allowed where there is an overwhelming majority of over 75%.
The Brexit referendum was 51.89% leave and 48.11% remain and only 72.21% of the people voted. Therefore, this is not an overwhelming majority and the phrase “will of the people” should not apply, as it is a false claim.
