The Houses of Parliament should erect a monument to Daniel O'Connell
Daniel O'Connell, often known as The Liberator or The Great Emancipator, was an Irish political leader. He campaigned, successfully, for Catholic Emancipation in the first half of the 19th century.
O'Connell played a leading role in achieving Catholic Emancipation - including the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament - and the values of egalitarianism, tolerance and human rights, which he helped instil, continue to underpin modern democracy around the world. A leading MP from 1828-1841, his philosophy and career inspired diverse others from Mahatma Gandhi to Martin Luther King Jr. to Nelson Mandela. It is time for O'Connell to be recognised with a monument in Parliament.
