Change the law so SEN children are not forced to retake Maths & English GSCE's

Petition Details

My son has a condition that means he doesn't understand Maths and finds English impossible. To force him by law to retake these exams is demoralising for him. I've had tears from my son as he feels a disgrace that he can't pass these exams. This affects special needs young people countrywide.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We're sorry to hear about the stress that your son has been under.

It isn't a requirement by law for children to resit their English or Maths GCSEs. It is, however, a condition of funding for some education providers. There are circumstances in which students can be exempt; for example, if they have multiple and complex needs.

You can find out more here (page 50): www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/607246/16_to_19_funding_guidance_2017_to_2018_v_1.0__003_.pdf

You may wish to speak to your education provider about this issue.

You could start a new petition asking for all students with special educational needs to be automatically exempt, if that's what you want to happen.
