Parliament to debate accountability & efficacy of Sharia Councils under UK law.
Sharia law varies in interpretation within Islam but tends to be male dominated and discriminates against vulnerable women who may not be aware of their rights under civil law, Parliament to consider any legal incompatibilities between Sharia and UK law and how vulnerable women can be protected.
Parliament are aware of concerns that Sharia Councils may make different judgements after civil courts have made their judgements and vulnerable women may feel peer pressure to comply with theocratic law. We pride ourselves on equality and one law for all, regardless of gender or religion but in practice all women do not access it.
