Petition Action

Enforce stricter penalties on parents who don't pay their child support payments

Petition Details

Throughout the country there are more than 700,000 families with dependant children who are presently owed more than £1 billion in unpaid child maintenance. By law all parents are legally responsible for their children but the Government does little to actually enforce this law.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

It's already possible for people who don't pay child maintenance to be sent to prison for non-payment, or to have deductions taken from their bank account, their earnings or from their benefits. There is more information about this here:

www.citizensadvice.org.uk/relationships/children-and-young-people/child-maintenance/child-maintenance-2012-scheme/child-maintenance-enforcement/child-maintenance-enforcement-where-to-start/

We're therefore not sure exactly what action you'd like the Government or Parliament to take.
