Petition Action

Fine* patients who do not attend (DNA) NHS hospital appointments.

Petition Details

DNAs:
- Cost the NHS an estimated £225 million in 2012 to 2013°
- Result in extended waiting lists
- Are an inefficient use of staff
- Occurred in around 5.6 million (9% of the total) NHS outpatient appointments in England between 2014 to 2015°°
(See additional details for sources °and°°)

Additional Information

Appointments where a patient does not show or provide prior notice are regarded as DNAs (did not attend).
*To reduce DNAs, provide an incentive from as little as a £1 circumstantial charge to encourage patients to cancel. Thus freeing a space for those who can attend the appointment.
