Petition Action

Give custodial sentences to those authorising usage of banned building materials

Petition Details

Following the Grenfell Tower/ Lakanal House/ Dunmurry tower fires we are calling for new legislation with retrospective powers that both fines companies and also jails any individuals (eg, manager, politician), responsible for authorising the use of building products banned across the EU, AU or US.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

It's up to the courts, not the UK Government or Parliament, to decide on the sentence in an individual case.

If you'd like the law to be changed, you could start a new petition explaining clearly what changes you'd like to see. For example, you could ask for UK laws on building products to be extended, so that materials banned elsewhere in the EU, in the USA and in Australia are also banned here, if that's what you would like to happen.
