Tougher sentencing for those who attack emergency services personnel

Petition Details

Too many times we hear of Police Officers and Paramedics who have been physically attacked by those they are arresting or helping. If it gets to court the sentencing is far too lenient.
We need tougher sentencing to show these actions are not acceptable.

Additional Information

The police uphold the law and paramedics try and save people’s lives.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Parliament is already considering changing the law on this issue, so we're not sure exactly what further action you'd like to see.

The Government supports the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Bill, which is due to have its final parliamentary stage in April 2018. The Bill plans to introduce a new offence of attacking an emergency worker while they are doing their job and increase the maximum sentence.
