Petition Action

Give Drivers Going Through A Red X On The Motorway Points & A Fine.

Petition Details

Roadworkers normally work in those red X carriageways and are put at risk of being hit and killed by careless drivers flouting the law by continuing to drive where they shouldn’t be!

Additional Information

We’ve all seen those red x’s on the motorway when there’s been an accident or roadworks are being installed by road workers and you get loads of drivers still driving through those red x’s without a care in the world.

Not only do they put road workers lives at risk by driving in those lanes, trying to push in at the last moment causing traffic jams, they get under the skin of law abiding citizens who do take notice of the laws of the road and get into the correct lane without endangering roadworkers lives.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

It is already an offence to drive in a lane that has a red x on a motorway. The maximum available penalty for this offence is a £1,000 fine, endorsement points and/or a disqualification. It is also a Fixed Penalty Offence, which means that instead of going to court, offenders can get a £50 fine and 3 points on their licence.

We're therefore not sure what further action you want the UK Government and Parliament to take.

You could start a new petition asking the Government to provide more money for roads policing on motorways, if that's what you want to happen. You could also start a new petition asking the Government to launch an awareness campaign aimed at drivers about the dangers of breaking this law, if that's what you want to happen.
