Petition Action

Ban gender and ethnicity specific job advertisements

Petition Details

The U.K. has a proud history of fighting intolerance and striving for equality between the sexes and various different ethnic groups. We know fighting fire with fire never works, so it’s time the government legislated against discriminatory job ads that bizarrely seek to “end discrimination”

Additional Information

The introduction of job ads that explicitly request only certain ethnicities or genders (within reason) apply is an affront to british values. By limiting the scope of candidates you reduce your chances of hiring the best and worthiest candidates for the job. So called “positive discrimination” job advertisements, like all female shortlist’s for example, should be legally prohibited as, no matter the excuse, discrimination is discrimination and merit is the only thing that matters.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

It is already illegal to discriminate against someone because of their race, sex, or sexual orientation, so we're not sure what further action you'd like the Government or Parliament to take.

You can find out more here:

www.gov.uk/discrimination-your-rights

In a few circumstances, if an employer can show that you need to be a particular sex in order to do a certain job, they can advertise for someone of that sex. For example, advertising a job as a counsellor in a women's refuge as a job for women only.
