Petition Action

Posthumously award the Military Cross to the family of Walter Tull.

Petition Details

Walter Tull lost his parents as a child. He later began a career in football, eventually playing for Spurs. In 1914, Tull signed up to the Army. He was promoted to officer, despite the fact that as a Black man, this was not allowed under Army regulations.

Additional Information

In 1914, only people of European descent were allowed to be officers; Walter Tull was therefore the first ever Black officer in the British Army, setting the foundations for equality in today’s society not just in sports, but the Armed Forces and society as a whole. Tull faced discrimination his whole life, but gave his life in the service of Britain and deserves to be recognised.
