Petition Action

Make the investigation of any cases of FGM mandatory by the police.

Petition Details

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is the deliberate, ritual removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. Such acts have been illigal in the UK since 1985 under the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1958 yet there have been no convictions and only one unsuccessful prosecution.

Additional Information

According to figures released by NHS Digital for the period April 2016- March 2017, there were 9000 recorded visits to hospitals and GP's in which FGM was a factor.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

Deciding what action to take on a specific report of a crime is an operational decision for the police. You can find out more here:

www.police.uk/information-and-advice/court-service/the-process/

You can find out more about what the Government is doing to tackle FGM here:

www.gov.uk/search?q=fgm

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
