Petition Action

Require product packaging to inform consumers of reduced 'standard' size.

Petition Details

Prices are staying the same, but the items we buy are shrinking. In the last five years, 2,529 products have shrunk in size with price unchanged. (ONS, 2017)

Shrinkflation is underhand and unethical - not just restricted to junk food, but occurring across the household shopping basket.

Additional Information

Some justify shrinkflation, citing increased costs. Even if true, this is a slippery slope. There is no guarantee that businesses will reverse shrinkflation in a better economic climate. Shareholders will not appreciate the elimination of profit margins, meaning shrinkflation is unlikely to be reversed.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
