Petition Action

Make all motorway service station parking free, and ban charges for overstaying

Petition Details

Motorway service areas are universally understood as places for tired drivers to recuperate, ensuring maximum attentiveness and safety on the roads.
In the UK, service areas frequently charge two-three figure sums to anyone overstaying a couple of hours, making safe resting/sleeping impossible.

Additional Information

RoSPA estimate driver fatigue to be a factor in 20% of road accidents and that these crashes are 50% more likely to result in death or serious injury.

The Highway Code instructs:

"If you feel at all sleepy, stop in a safe place. Do not stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway."

In France, it is expected that drivers stop and rest when they get tired and, as such, rest stops are generally free of parking charges.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action, and it is not clear whether you want to make all parking free or to ban charges for overstaying.
