Give students in unaffordable cities larger student loans for unaffordable rent.
Winchester, outside of London is the second most expensive place to live in the UK. House prices have increased by 59% since 2007 but student loans have been cut. Large numbers of students here spent their entire student loans on housing alone and it’s getting more and more unaffordable every year.
Minimum halls costs are £121 p/w to £146 p/w.
Private housing costs roughly the same.
There is a shortage of jobs for students who need to work to afford rent, food and necessities. A number of students work outside of Winchester to secure work. Other students choose to live in surrounding towns and cities for cheaper rent.
