Make it a criminal offence for Newspapers to mislead the public.

Petition Details

There has been so many stories in the press in the last decade that have influenced peoples thinking, yet have been proven to be totally fabricated. Particularly on subjects of race, religion, immigration. As it is now the papers can say what they like without much consequence. Retraction not enough

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We're not sure what specific action you'd like.

In particular, we're not sure whether you'd like to make all misleading reporting an offence or only deliberate misleading reporting. We're also not sure what you'd like to happen with retractions.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
