Petition Action

Reason 4 Change campaigns to change rehabilitation period lengths.

Petition Details

Reason 4 Change is asking for a new ‘case by case’ filtering system for individuals with historical convictions.

Once a significant period has past, no further offences have been committed and the individual is clearly completely rehabilitated, there needs to be eligibility for a ‘spent’ status.

Additional Information

Life time unnecessary disclosure causes sustained upset, distress and humiliation. Being asked for disclosure of convictions for such things as car and home insurance creates regular stress and anxiety for many individuals.

Applications which are NOT exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 still have the right to ask this question which in turn raises unnecessary discrimination. The current situation is causing unfair discrimination and separation.

There is real Reason 4 change

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. It's clear that you care about rehabilitation periods, but it's not clear how exactly you'd like them to change. In particular, we're not sure what you mean by "a significant period" or "clearly completely rehabilitated".

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
