Make it illegal to smoke in a private property with a child present.
It has been documented that second-hand smoke is a health hazard, being in an enclosed space increases this risk, with children being particularly vulnerable.
It is already illegal to smoke in enclosed public spaces, workplaces, in public and work vehicles and in private vehicles carrying children.
The health hazards of second-hand smoke include:
Cancer
Heart disease
Strokes
Sudden infant death syndome
Chronic cough
Asthma
Increased respiratory tract infections
Children are particularly vulnerable as they are still growing and have a higher respiration rate than adults. Also, they often do not have the ability to request their adult guardian not to smoke, or to take themselves away from the smokey environment.
