What to do?
Combine teacher assessment, effort levels and academic ability in final grading, lowering students' anxiety as grades won't depend solely on exam performance.
The common misconception that exams are the be-all-and-end-all contributes to the rising stress levels of students, increasing vulnerability to mental illness.
The financial consequences of treating such preventable illnesses adds to the strain on the NHS.
Change the education system and enable funds to be better utilised.
