Supermarkets to sell high sugar cereals separately, in the confectionery aisle.
Some breakfast cereals are increasingly resembling confectionery, with many types having versions containing chocolate. Many contain between 25 - 39% sugar, are packaged to appeal to children, and are advertised on children’s TV. Meanwhile, childhood obesity rates in the UK continue to climb.
Many children consume too much sugar at breakfast, often over half their recommended daily amount (Public Health England 2017).
1 in 5 British children finishes primary school obese (NHS 2017).
The UK is Europe’s leading consumer of breakfast cereals (Bakeryand Snacks.com).
Typical supermarket Corn Flakes contain only 8% sugar.
A typical confectionery bar contains 45-50% sugar.
Breakfast cereals containing 20-39% sugar should have to be sold separately from others, in the confectionery aisle.
