Petition Action

No Military Action without Parliamentary debate

Petition Details

There is no codified parliamentary procedure that formally requires the Government to seek approval before taking military action. We cannot allow Government to attack countries without Parliament being fully informed about the type of threat, who is affected and the risks to actions being taken.

Additional Information

In practice governments in modern times have usually ensured parliamentary debate except in circumstances where militarily action for the security of the country is required immediately – without a full parliamentary debate. The arguments for making a change is logical as such an important decision should not bypass democratic representation.
