Petition Action

Supermarkets to be legally obliged to sell high sugar cereals separately.

Petition Details

Some breakfast cereals increasingly resemble confectionery, with many types having versions containing chocolate. Many contain between 20-39% sugar, are packaged to appeal to children, and are advertised on children’s TV. Meanwhile, childhood obesity rates continue to climb.

Additional Information

Many children consume over half their recommended daily amount of sugar at breakfast (Public Health England 2017).
1in 5 British children finishes primary school obese (NHS 2017).
Typical supermarket Corn Flakes contain about 10% sugar.
Typical confectionery bars contain 45-50% sugar.
The govt. should make supermarkets legally obliged to sell those breakfast cereals containing 20-40% sugar separately, in the confectionery aisle, away from other breakfast cereals.
