Shutdown the Vedanta Sterlite Copper an illegal smelter in Tamil Nadu, India
British company Vedanta Sterlite Copper begun construction of a new 4 million tonne/year smelter almost doubling their capacity, but the existing smelter has continuously polluted their water and air since 1996, causing respiratory, dermal infections and other illness especially among children.
Vedanta Sterlite’s copper smelter's Environmental Impact Assessment was a sham, and coastal regulations forbidding the location of industrial plant within 25km of the Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserve was ignored. Reports of illegal waste dumps around the town, and closest port data revealed usage of highly contaminated imported copper concentrates and disposing its waste into the sensitive Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, full of coral reefs and mangrove forests causing irreversible damage .
