Make receipt printing in shops optional.

Petition Details

Many self-service machines in supermarket shops print their receipts automatically without request by the customer. This leads to a great waste of paper - demonstrated by the leftover receipts and bins next to the self-service machines filled with unwanted receipts.

Additional Information

In the UK 11 billion receipts are produced a year (Huffington Post), costing 0.5p each for the retailer, and as a tree equates to 10,000 receipts there is a huge costs both environmentally and economically by printing receipts by default. Some retailers do ask if the customer want a receipt, Tesco, For Example. But others, like the Co-operative and Sainsbury's do not. This is something I want to change to reduce waste. This doesn't begin to consider the cost in producing these receipts.
