Ban Longline Fishing, from all areas of the common wealth.
Long line fishing is the commercial fishing industries 'modernised' traditional hook and line - only far more indiscriminate and deadly. The main fishing line used in this process is around 60 miles long with secondary lines branching off containing thousands of hooks.
Not only this, thousands of lines often drift into shipping lanes where they are then cut leaving tonnes of carcasses to rot. In Australia alone more than 450,000 sharks die each year unnecessarily. Numerous other marine life are being threatened by longline fishing including, sea turtles, oceanic dolphins and wales. Often swallowing the hooks or suffer injury as they become entangled in the longlines. By banning this method it would create thousands of jobs in order to supply to the demand.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The UK Government and Parliament cannot ban longline fishing from all areas of the Commonwealth.
You could start a new petition asking the Government and Parliament to urge Commonwealth Governments to ban longline fishing, if that's what you want to happen.
