Emancipation Day Bank Holiday.... First Monday in August

Petition Details

The emancipation of slavery which took place in August 1833 is celebrated across different parts of the world. Britain, who played a big part in the slave trade, but, consequently played its’ part in the emancipation of slavery has never recognised this day as an important event in our history.

Additional Information

The slave trade lasted for centuries and resulted in millions of people losing their lives. A vast amount losing their lives in horrific circumstances. Britain made vast amount of money during the slave trade and many establishments in Britain was built on the back of it.
The emancipation has left us with great people that have played a major part in the human rights campaign such as Nelson Mandela, Dr Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks. But we also have to remember that these people wouldn’t have the voice to speak if it wasn’t for emancipation.
By having Emancipation day as a bank holiday it will make the people of Britain more aware and understand our past history.
