Introduce ‘Dental Hygiene in pregnancy’ booklets to 12 week antenatal checkups
I feel like we are being let down in terms of proactive dental hygiene education for pregnant women.
I believe thousands of women are having to undergo dental work postpartum as they were not aware of the significant affect that changes in hormones during pregnancy can have on their teeth.
I am aware that the NHS provides free dental care to pregnant women & for up to one year post partum but I feel that more should be done proactively in order to stop new mums having to go through painful/intrusive dental treatment.
Advice regarding additional brushing after certain foods, not brushing immediately after bouts of morning sickness, additional visits to the hygienist, increasing calcium & vitamin D
Ensuring that both midwives & dentists educate pregnant women of additional risks
