Defrauding a democratic vote nullifies the result of the vote

Petition Details

The electoral commission has the power to investigate and fine campaigns that break electoral law. However the relatively small fines can be seen as simply doing business by people who want to sway a vote in their favour. This corrupts our democracy.

Additional Information

The draft of an investigation into Vote Leave concludes it broke spending limits and failed to comply with some of the rules:

- made an inaccurate return of campaign expenditure
- is missing invoices and receipts
- failed to comply with a statutory notice
- exceeded its spending limit

As a result of its findings it has imposed fines. However the result still stands. This makes a mockery of our democracy.

If you cheat to win a game, then you do not win the game.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.
In particular, we're not sure whether you'd like action on the EU Referendum or votes and elections in general.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. For example, you could ask Parliament to change the law to require a vote to be re-run if electoral law has been broken.
