Petition Details

Government voted not to keep in uk law a part of EU legislation that protects animals. Scrapping this opens doors for cruel sports to be legal, no restrictions on unnecessary painful lab testing and no prosecutions for starving or abusing household pets. This law can't be allowed to be scrapped.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Government has already published a draft law, called the Draft Animal Welfare (Sentencing and Recognition of Sentience) Bill 2017. The Government says that this draft law "does two things. It states that animals are sentient beings and it increases the maximum penalty for animal welfare cruelty offences from 6 months to 5 years imprisonment."
