Add 'Financial Circumstances' as a protected characteristic in Equality Act 2010
Securing accommodation in the Private Rented Sector (PRS) is so hard, especially when someone is claiming benefits, they are told outright that they can not rent private rented accommodation as they claim benefits. A disabled person would not be told this as it would be seen as discrimination.
There is not enough Social Housing and the local authorities are heavily relying on the PRS to relieve the housing crisis, however, private landlords are very reluctant to take on tenants who claim benefits, even if the benefits are a top up.
Wales brought in the Housing Wales Act (2014) which under section 2 (homelessness) the government gave local authorities power to discharge homeless cases into the PRS, but landlords won't take on tenants who have been homeless or close to homelessness.
