Petition Action

Cap Solicitors/Barristers Fees to a maximum ten times National Minimum Wage.

Petition Details

Make the law affordable to everyday people. Most Solicitors charge a minimum of £250 + vat per hour. Barristers will cost you even more. Abusing their monopolistic position to extort vast sums.
SCANDALOUS EXPLOITATION!! Meaning only the rich can afford to go to court and be represented.

Additional Information

Legal aid is available to all but a very tiny minority. For the rest, in times of real desperation, when confronted with serious family matters and other life changing issues, turning to the law is out of the question.
Straightforward divorces and child arrangement legal fees can typically cost in excess of £20,000! Complicated ones much more.
With so many MPs in the legal profession it won't be easy!
Sign this petition and give everybody affordable law – a basic human right.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand you are concerned about the cost of legal action but we aren't sure what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take.

Solicitor's and barrister's fees vary greatly depending on the type of work they are undertaking. We aren't sure whether you are talking about legal work in a particular area.

You could start a new petition calling for the Government to increase access to legal aid if that is something you would like to see happen.
