Worrying levels of iodine deficiency in the UK

Additional Information

As reported by the BBC and mentioned in a number of medical articles there is a direct link between insufficient levels of iodine in diet and irreversible mental retardation in children.

This petition calls on the Government to:
1) Follow steps taken by other European countries and introduce legislation requiring food manufacturers to enrich foods with iodine.
2) Legislate that every establishment that sells salt for human consumption must have iodine enriched salt on sale.
3) Establish a national campaign to make consumers aware of the importance of consuming iodine enriched salt. That iodine is especially important for pregnant women. The impact of insufficient iodine to child mental development. That all salt on sale is not the same. That sea salt and mined salt doesn't naturally contain sufficient iodine levels, it needs to be enriched.
