Petition Action

Recognise Sensory Processing Disorder as a disability in it's own right.

Petition Details

Sensory Processing Disorder is a debilitating condition that can make every day normal living virtually impossible without support, yet it is not recognised on its own as a disability. Only when it comes with a second diagnosis, for example Aspergers Syndrome, is it recognised.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We're not sure exactly what you mean by asking for Sensory Processing Disorder to be made a recognised disability.

Laws and policies don't usually list specific conditions and define them as disabilities. In most cases, it’s the impact on the person’s life that qualifies them for protection under the law or makes them eligible for support.

You can find out more about how to show someone's disabled under the Equality Act here:

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
