Petition Action

Change the rules on thresholds for child benefit so that it is fair for all

Petition Details

Currently, if a couple both earn 45k and so a combined income of 90k, they can claim child benefit with no tax impact. However, if a single parent earns 55k, they will have 50% of their child benefit taken in tax. Even though the couple have an extra 35k coming into the household.

Additional Information

This is clearly an extremely unfair way of penalising single parents who earn more. The rules should mean that everyone is treated equally and it should clearly be based on household income.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There's already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.

You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.

The rules you would like changed are not specific to child benefit. Income tax thresholds are assessed by individual rather than by household.

You could sign this petition, which calls for income tax to be assessed by household, if that is something you would like to see happen:

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/216429

Alternative, you could start a new petition calling for a specific tax exemption for single parents claiming child benefit.
