Petition Action

Implement protocol to stop the unnecessary waste of unused medicine in the NHS.

Petition Details

Every year £300 million pounds worth of medicine is unused or wasted in the NHS and £150 million of this can be avoided. There is currently no protocol for the re-use, recycling or re-distribution of medicine within the NHS and tons of unused medicine in perfect condition is thrown away every day.

Additional Information

This year pressures on the NHS has dominated headlines and we are constantly subject to cuts that negatively impact our lives.Did you know that medicine you receive and never open or use has to be destroyed?Did you know that no charity, hospice or chemist can accept unused medicine for redistribution? With millions of people, both in our country and abroad in constant need of medicine, is it not an injustice to see £300 million of it wasted every year?
It is time for change and it starts today.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the UK Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about medical waste, but we are not sure action you want the Government to take. In particular, we aren't sure what you mean by "implement a protocol".

You could start a new petition setting out clearly what change you would like to see.
