Recognise Psychiatric Assistance dogs as a type of assistance dog in the UK.
Currently, there are no recognised Psychiatric Assistance dogs charities in the UK. This leaves many people who could benefit from an assistance dog unable to receive help especially if that person is under the age of 18.
Assistance Dogs UK has a register of Assistance dog charities in the UK with eight charities on it, including Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs and Support Dogs. These charities train dogs to aid people with a physical disability. One in four people will experience a mental disability each year (Mind) costing the economy £105 Billion a year (NHS England). Currently, people with Mental Health problems buy and train their own dog. This has a success rate of 1 in 300 (PAWs foundation).
