Extend the deadline of Article 50
More time and a far better democratic process are required to identify a workable path forward on Brexit. Therefore, we call upon the British Parliament to instruct the government to propose an extension of Article 50 of at least one year beyond the designated withdrawal date.
Article 50.3 of the Lisbon Treaty sets out that a Member State’s exit from the European Union may be deferred if “the European Council, in agreement with the Member State concerned, unanimously decides to extend this period.”
This extension would allow time for all relevant parties in the UK and in the EU to consider, negotiate and build, in a meaningful and inclusive dialogue with their citizens, a mutually beneficial future relationship, in whatever form that might take.
