The BBC must return millions of pounds of grants it has received from the EU

Petition Details

It has been revealed that the BBC has received millions of pounds from the European Union. At a time when our country is negotiating a Brexit deal, our national broadcaster must be fair and unbiased in its reporting. Accepting these grants creates a clear conflict of interest, they must be returned.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The BBC is an independent body governed by a Royal Charter. Under the terms of that Charter, the BBC is operationally and editorially independent of government and there is no provision for the government to intervene in the BBC’s day-to-day operations.

In response to freedom of information requests on this topic, the BBC has stated:

“No News programmes are permitted to take external funding and therefore cannot take EU funding at all, ensuring it cannot impact on editorial decisions. Furthermore, no EU funds are directly accessed by any in-house BBC productions. In line with its overall editorial independence, the BBC has in place strict rules to ensure that any external funding it receives does not diminish the BBC’s editorial control of BBC output nor comprises its editorial impartiality or integrity. Further information is available in the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines which are published at the following link:
