Change from “first past the post” to “mixed member proportional representation”

Petition Details

Mixed Member Proportional (MMP)
Voters have two votes, one for their electorate MP and one for their preferred political party.

First Past the Post (FPP)
There is no party vote, and the representation each party has in Parliament is determined by how successful their electorate candidates are.

MMP
Each party’s representation in Parliament is determined by their percentage of the nationwide party vote – MPs from the party list are added to the electorate MPs to bring each party up to the same percentage of seats in Parliament.

FPP
Candidates don’t need more than 50 percent of the vote to win an electorate seat, just more than their closest opponent.

MMP is a fairer representation of its voters in parliament, as FPP only allows for a 2 party state.
