Look at measures allowing local authorities to use empty residential properties

Petition Details

The government should put in place measures to allow local authorities to seize residential properties which are empty for more than two years, when the owner/s live in another property whether in the UK or abroad, to ensure that those in need of a home can access one.

Additional Information

The government should put in place measures to allow local authorities to seize residential properties which are empty for more than two years, when the owner/s live in another property whether in the UK or abroad, to ensure that those in need of a home can access one. Residential properties should not be left empty while individuals in the local area are in need of housing.

More than 11,000 homes in the UK have been empty for at least a decade, research from the Liberal Democrats has found.
The data showed that 60,000 properties had been empty for two years or more, 23,000 for five years or more and more than 11,000 for ten years.
