Petition Action

Make it a crime for MPs or their families to profit from changes in legislation

Petition Details

MPs should debate legislation to improve the lives of the UK citizens. Where an MP, or their family, has an interest outside of politics which could result in personal financial gain following a decision in parliament, they should not be lawfully permitted to influence the relevant debate.

Additional Information

Government ministers are allowed to vote on legislation which can result in personal benefits following the result. Where there is a conflict of interest, law should prevent the MP from influencing or debating that legislation. For example, 1 in 5 MPs is a landlord - they should not be permitted to vote on changes in legislation which affects landlords.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because we aren't sure what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take.

Making it illegal for MPs to vote on legislation that they might profit from would mean, for example, that MPs would not be able to vote for reductions in taxes like income tax or VAT. We aren't sure that is what you intended.

MPs are already required to register and declare financial interests. If there is a conflict between their personal interest and the public interest, they must resolve it straightaway and in favour of the public interest. Complaints that a Member has breached the Code of Conduct are examined by the independent Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.

You can find the Code of Conduct for the House of Commons here:

www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/standards-and-financial-interests/parliamentary-commissioner-for-standards/code-of-conduct-and-rules-of-the-house/

You could start a new petition calling for changes to the Code if that is something you would like to see happen.
