Make screening for Group B Strep part of the nhs maternity screening programme
Group B Strep is not currently on the NHS screening programme for pregnant ladies in the UK. Group B Strep is a bacteria that many women can carry without even knowing. If a pregnant lady is a carrier of this bacteria it can have complications on the baby during labour if not prevented.
To prevent Group B Strep being passed onto the baby intravenous antibiotics need to be given during labour. Failure to prevent could lead to Sepsis, Meningitis, Pneumonia and even be fatal for baby.
Group B Strep is a bacteria that most women would not be aware of as there are no symptoms.
A simple test can diagnose however this isn't routinely offered by the NHS.
