Petition Action

Work experience for MPs and Lords.

Petition Details

Every year all politicians should undertake one week of randomly assigned work experience – possibly to be extended to some civil servants.

This will allow them to experience what work is like for all classes of people. Thus, they will be able to make better decisions in parliament.

Additional Information

An independent group will find work experience places for MPs and Lords. The jobs selected will be based upon the proportion of people they employ – 85% of places would be in jobs paying less than £25k/yr.

The MPs and Lords will be paired with someone from an opposing party. The pair will be assigned a job for one week. This selection will be random.

The media won't report on the politicians during the week to avoid interfering in how the MPs conduct themselves.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition as this would be a decision for individual MPs and Peers and not the UK Government or Parliament.

The Industry and Parliament Trust already provides opportunities for MPs and Peers to take part in placements with business and industry. You can find out more here:
