Petition Action

No limits on defending your own house if being broken into.

Petition Details

So many break in and burglaries are occurring at the moment during the middle of the day. You should be allowed to use any means necessary to defend your family and home, without any reprecussions. If the burglars don't care who they tie up and hurt why should we give in and them terrorise us.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because we aren't sure what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take.

The law already allows people to use reasonable force to defend themselves and their home. Guidance issued by the Criminal Prosecution Service says "So long as you only do what you honestly and instinctively believe is necessary in the heat of the moment, that would be the strongest evidence of you acting lawfully and in self-defence."

You can find out more here:

You could start a new petition to remove the requirement to use reasonable force if that is something you would like to see happen.
