Petition Action

Charge road tax for foreign drivers on UK roads

Petition Details

We need to start charging all vehicles on our roads not just the British ones so many eu plated vehicles are on British roads not paying a penny. Avoiding toll charges, speed cameras, parking tickets so at least make them pay road tax that the police can check.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because we aren't sure what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take.

Cars that are registered overseas are subject to road tax unless all of the following circumstances apply:

the driver is visiting and does not plan to live here
the vehicle is registered and taxed in its home country
the vehicle is only used for up to 6 months in total - this can be a single visit, or several shorter visits over 12 months.

You can out more here:

www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/temporary-imports

Vehicles registered overseas are subject to road tolls, fines and parking tickets like any other.

You could start a new petition calling for the above exemptions to be removed if that is something you would like to see happen.
