An MP’s resignation from their political party, should trigger a by-election.
When we elect our MPs, they stand on a platform aligned to a political party. We vote for them because of that platform. A resignation from that political party should result in them standing down and fighting for their seat again on a new platform. Retention of a seat is anti-democratic.
The Recall Act 2015, does not allow for the triggering of a by-election in cases where MPs resign from the Party they represented when elected. An amendment to the Act would allow this.
