Petition Action

Allow UK Citizens to choose to retain their EU Membership on an individual basis

Petition Details

Seen as the referndum was so close, people should be aloud to individually choose whether to remain a member of the EU or to lose EU citizenship individually. The country is too divided on this issue to come to a compromise and so the only way to please everyone is to give individuals a choice.

Additional Information

By allowing people to individually choose whether to keep their EU citizenship or not would mean that those who wanted to remain will keep their freedom of movement and all the other benefits of EU Membership. While those who voted to leave the EU will lose their EU citizenship and so will also be pleased. By doing this, we can end the constant back and forth of the EU withdrawal and move on without any further disagreement

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because EU citizenship is the responsiblity of the European Union and not the UK Government or Parliament.

You could start a new petition asking the UK Government to negotiate with the EU to allow UK citizens to retain the option of EU citizenship if that is something you would like to see happen.
