Petition Action

Make A level music an open score exam.

Petition Details

Music is a subject of analysis, yet the A level syllabus makes it a subject reliant on memory.

Students are required to memorize 40+ 'set works', with required knowledge of other 'wider listening' pieces.

I strongly believe that students ought to have access to a score in their exam.

Additional Information

It is indisputable that the ability to recognize musical devices by ear is a pivotal skill for musicians, BUT this skill is assessed during the unheard music extract, which is already a big part of the exam.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. The content of exams is the responsibility for the awarding body, and oversight of exam boards is the responsibility of Ofqual, the independent regulator.
