The minimum age for using a smartphone should be 16.
I believe smartphones are a dangerous and easily concealable form of communication. They enable our youth to communicate with strangers who may easily groom them and do them harm, making smartphones a safeguarding nightmare. Smartphones are also difficult to filter and promote unsociable behaviour.
Many knife crimes started as mere slights on social media platforms that are exclusively accessible through smartphones. Grooming via Instagram has also tripled in the last year according to NSPCC. Many studies have linked time spent on social media to clinical depression. Smartphones may also slow down mental development.
